Artist Statement
A glass of water, a piece of paper, and a watercolor set-that’s where it all began. When I was little, I was introduced to varying assortment of art materials through my mom’s art career. In high school, I developed a personal interest in clothing made from discarded materials. Through this creative process I obtained a rudimentary understanding of our environmental crisis fueled by the second largest polluter in the world, the fashion industry. With little regulation on production, textile dyeing, and carbon emissions, the industry continues to grow to fulfill our gratuitous consumer needs. The growing concern of environmental degradation has drawn my attention to the design of our clothing and circular business model. The fashion industry needs to be changed. We as a consumer need to be informed of the clothing process in its entirety. My creative practices intertwine and emphasis the need to consider environmental sustainability through a thorough self-conscious design process.
I continue to discover new techniques and mediums that revolve around my strong eco-mentality. I hone my garment construction skills through my new collection of clothing made from paper and bottle caps. In each garment, I methodically design with unconventional discarded materials to accentuate the movement of the body. Through my art and creative process, I aspire to impact peoples clothing purchases and make them aware of its environmental cost.
